Healthy Tanning Alternative
We all know about the seriousness of sun damage to our skin, but still love that over all glow and look of a summer tan. Now you can safely have that golden bronze skin tone with the advancements in self tanning products over the past years. You will no longer have to endure the orange coloring, chemical smell, or streaks associated with self tanners of the past. With new products and an initial professional application, can have a lasting and beautiful tan without the damage of UVA and UVB rays.

How Do Self Tanners Work?
Skin is made up of two main layers: the epidermis on the outside, and dermis on the inside. Whether you are talking about sun tanning or self -tanners, the epidermis is where the action occurs. The epidermis is also made up of layers. The deepest layer of the epidermis , called the stratum basale ( basal layer), is affected during sun tanning. The stratum corneum (horny layer) is the outermost layer of the epidermis--it is the layer that is affected by most sunless-tanning products. There are several different kinds of sunless-tanning products available today, with topical self-tanners being the safest form of tanning. Tanning Products made their debut in 1960, when Coppertone® came out with the first sunless-tanning product -- QT® or Quick Tanning Lotion. If you are old enough to remember this, you may recall the tell-tale orange coloring and chemical smell of this original self tanning product. Sunless tanning products have come a long way since then. According to American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless- or self-tanning lotions that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, a color change occurs.

How Long Will My Tan Last?
Our skin cells are constantly renewing, every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away from the surface of your skin. In fact, every 35 to 45 days, you have a whole new set of cells. As cells renew, tans including tans from self-tanning lotions, will gradually fade. For this reason, most of these products suggest that you reapply the sunless- or self-tanner to maintain your "tan." Professional exfoliation ( Body Polish ) followed by application of a self tanner will help to eliminate streaks and overly pigmented areas of the hands, elbows, heels, and knees. Once a professional application has been applied, your tan can be easily maintained at home with a self application of tanning lotion every three - four days. It's important to remember that most of these products, unless they contain an added sunscreen, will not protect you from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Even products that do contain a sunscreen won't be of much help, since they lose their efficacy within hours of application. So, if you're planning to head outside to show off your new glow, be sure to apply some extra sunscreen, and remember to apply again if you will be outside, or in the water for any extended period of time.

Why Should I Use Professional Sunscreen Products?
The FDA is working to establish clearer, and more consumer conscience guidelines for sunscreen products. For more information :http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/ANSWERS/ANS00955.html

According to Dr. Barry Handler an American Board Certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, daily use of professional sunscreen products are an essential part of sun protection in preventing skin damage which could lead to skin cancer. Licensed estheticians at Envison Personalized Health use professional products used by such as CA Botana's Dr. Schwab's Parasol Ultra, Pharmaskincare's Solar / C Complex, that not only meet, but exceed these standards unlike most over the counter products found in drug stores and supermarkets. They contain more concentrated amounts of zinc dioxide and titianium dioxide. These ingredients are considered to be a physical sun block which reflects harmful UVB and UVA rays off the skin, never allowing them to penetrate and damage the skin. Most over the counter products are considered to be chemical sun blocks, which penetrate the skin, wrapping around the cells, allowing harmful rays to pass through the upper layers of skin creating damage before it can become active. Professional products are non-comedogenic, (don't clog pores) and contain a higher concentration of FDA approved ingredients.
