Women's Health: Menopause

Women’s Health and Menopausal support:

Menopause:

Menopause is not a disease, its not a curse.  Its another process in a woman’s life.  It doesn’t have to be hard, excruciating, or debilitating.  It doesn’t have to ruin your life!  However, with the sudden change in hormones,  the stressors of life remaining the same or mounting and our self perception menopause can quickly spiral out of our control.

In my opinion, there is no reason to rush in to HRT or any other "natural” hormone regiment. From a holistic point of view your adrenals and ovaries should be supported to help balance your hormones and lessen menopausal symptoms.

Remember when you were a young woman and you got your period?  Do you remember how dramatic and momentous it seemed? Well starting menopause and going through it is no different in emotional significance. Using appropriate and quality supplements can help with the physiological symptoms and and compassionate acupuncturist, such as myself can lend support through treatment and sound natural medical advice.  If you are suffering form hot flashes (with or without stress) insomnia (with or without night sweats), emotional instability, vaginal dryness, or bladder weakness then getting support form acupuncture and related therapies will help you.

Herbs are an important tool for an acupuncturist when treating Menopausal symptoms.

Tribulus: helps to decrease hot flashes. It is thought that menopausal symptoms are initiated in the hypothalamus.  Tribulus mimics estrogen and makes the body think there is sufficient estrogen present in the bloodstream which in turn helps to turn off the feed back loop to the hypothalamus, thus decreasing hot flashes. In Chinese medicine this herb is "Ci Ji Li”, also used to treat symptoms such as hot flashes.

Shatavari: This is an Ayurvedic herb that is especially helpful for Pitta doshas (aka: "hot angry”). This herb has several functions: improving sexual function, treating fertility issues, increasing lactation, and treating menopausal symptoms.

Wild Yam:  wild yam is only effective when taken orally and getting a quality form of wild yam is important to have the intended effects. This food/supplement has great potential to help alleviate symptoms and give back a woman’s ability to live her life, however LIKE ALL SUPPLEMENTS, it is important to talk with a licensed practitioner to make sure there won’t be any adverse side effects.

Black Cohosh and St John’s wort: If mood changes are starting to resemble your 13 year old self then two supplements may help to normalize hormones and stabilize moods.
