January 16th 2013 - Loving Your Winter Skin
Tanya Joy Brueckner
Licensed Esthetician
Envision Personalized Health
Well into the winter season, we can only hope that we have the complexion of Snow White, Princess Tiana, Princess Mulan, or even Pocahontas. Unfortunately, in this day and age the prevalence of synthetics in our products used on our skin and the pesticides or herbicides used on the crops that go into our produce is extreme. Things such as artificial colors, flavors, and fragrances can wreak havoc on bodies. We are not Biocompatible with these synthetics and often times the “anger” from them will come out of our biggest organ, the skin. Heat is also an issue, unless you use a radiator for heat, our heat sources can be very drying to the skin.
If you are not convinced yet that skin is permeable to environmental, topical, and food, think for a minute about the nicotine patch, this is a “sticker” attached to our skin that delivers small controlled doses of nicotine into our system. Another example is the birth control patch. Again, the hormones are delivered to your body by means of a small little patch on your skin. It is quite amazing when you really think about it.
Therefore, if the skin can absorb harmful synthetics and pharmaceuticals can be taken through the skin, clearly nutritious topicals can also be introduced to the skin to enhance skin health and beauty too.
As a licensed esthetician I can share that the secret to loving your winter skin can be really simple. Looking at the ingredients that you use on your skin is the first and most important step. Make sure they are free of synthetics, pesticides, artificial color, fragrance, food, and carcinogens. The best products that you can use are ones with pure, organic plant ingredients. A product line with these qualifications that I use and like is called Ajara Skincare. This line is also an Ayurvedic product, an ancient natural healing lifestyle. Other simple tips include:
always use sunscreen
avoid irritating synthetic clothing
don’t take long hot showers. The heat can remove important moisturizing oils creating itchy, dry skin
Apply moisture right after you get out of the shower. A good choice is an organic coconut oil
use a humidifier or cool mist to add moisture to the room. Make sure the humidifier is clean of mold and bacteria
Get enough vitamin D. During the winter months the sun does not provide enough vitamins that our body needs. Consider taking a supplement.
wear sunglasses to prevent squinting and getting wrinkles around the eye
use topical antioxidants after cleansing and before moisturizing
use a natural oil salve on lips to prevent chapping
By following these tips you can help ward of dry, sensitive skin and end up loving your winter skin.

August 6th 2011 - Yoga and
Ayurveda: Sister Sciences
“Yoga & Ayurveda are two closely related spiritual or
sacred sciences rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. Ayurveda is the Vedic
science of healing for both body and mind. Yoga is the Vedic science of Self-Realization
that depends upon a well-functioning body and mind. Both disciplines developed
together and have always been used together. Therefore, those who are
interested in one would benefit from studying the other.”~Dr. David Frawley~
Many people are
aware of yoga and are becoming increasingly more aware of the many health
benefits which a yoga practice can provide. Although yoga classes continue to
grow in number, most Americans are not yet aware of Ayurveda and its connection
with yoga. Both practices began around 5000 years ago in India, where they were
practiced together by the sages. The sages had the knowledge and an
understanding that the goal of optimum health was best achieved when the two
systems were practiced together. In the US, Ayurveda is considered a
Complimentary Alternative Medicine, and is the medical component of yoga.
Ayurveda not only treats chronic conditions, but also offers a preventive
approach and lifestyle path to optimal health, which includes the practice of
yoga postures for your specific body type or Dosha.
Becoming
aware of one self and our place in the universe is the ultimate goal, and
foundation of both yoga and Ayurveda. In order to achieve self-realization, one
cannot deny, the role of the physical body or its relationship to our physical
world. Most will find it very difficult to stay with the practice of yoga when
the physical body is out of balance or in a state of chronic stress, or
disease. Ayurveda offers that balance.
The health
and fitness benefits of yoga are undeniable when you start with the basics to
prevent injury, and are applying the postures that are best suited for your
body type or dosha. Yoga postures were originally designed to help your body
become more limber so that you could sit in a meditation posture for a period
of time to be rewarded with the benefits of meditation.
Ayurveda,
the “science of life” is a lifestyle or philosophy which, when added with yoga,
focuses on being in sync with rhythms of nature. By using the right combination
of foods, spices and herbs, a dosha specific daily routine, yoga asana, and bodywork,
we are empowered to correct imbalances in the body in order to achieve your
optimal health.

April 17th 2010 - Physical Benefits of Yoga For Your Dosha
There are many
physical benefits that occur as a person continues to practice yoga and a
person can feel the benefits after just one session. Three of the most
prominent physical benefits of yoga are increased flexibility, improved spinal
posture, and an increase in musculature tone/strength.
One of the
fastest and most noticeable benefits of yoga is increased flexibility. The
physical aspect of yoga is simply stretching, which creates elongation of
muscles, tendons, and ligaments. When a muscle is not stretched, it creates a
lot of tension which leads to tightness and eventually chronic pain in the
neck, shoulders, hips and low back. By practicing yoga, you are continually
lengthening and releasing the tension of those specific areas that become stiff
over time, mainly caused by over exertion or lack of activity.
Spinal extension
is a very important part in yoga, which creates an overall improved posture.
Postures such as Mountain Pose, Staff Pose, and Flat Back/Spinal Extension are
three postures that focus strictly on improving one’s posture. It is important
to always keep length within all forward bends, always lengthening from the
base of the spine which creates low back strength and a lengthened straight
spine. It is something that is carried into your day-to-day life, even as you
sit at your desk or while driving your car, yoga will improve one’s posture,
resulting in a postural awareness.
Yoga is a
physical activity, and with any physical movement, a person increases
musculature tone/strength. As you practice yoga, you are working against
gravity and use your own body weight, so that you firm/tone specific muscles.
As you progress, you will begin to strengthen not only major muscle groups, but
the smaller groups located deep within the shoulders, back, hips and ankles
which gives a person joint structural stability for day to day balance and
safety. Yoga is beneficial for all, and there are many forms of yoga to choose from. According to Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga ,knowing our specific Dosha (constitution) can help you better select the yoga form best suited to your body type and needs. Knowing whether you were Vata, Pitta or Kapha would be helpful in determining whether a yoga class in Bikrams yoga, gentle yoga , power yoga, Iyengar, Hatha, Vinyasa , would be best for you. Determine your Dosha today with a Free consultation at Envision Personalized Health.
By practicing
yoga; breath, stress reduction, flexibility, posture , muscular strength/tone, and self confidence are increased. These
benefits can then be carried off of the yoga mat and into the world, improving quality
of life and health. :: continue »
