Yoga Nidra or yogic sleep is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping.
Yoga Nidra is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness.
It is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of verbal instructions. This state of consciousness is different from meditation in which concentration on a single focus is required. In Yoga Nidra the practitioner’s hearing still connects to the instructions, but all other senses drift away.
The practice of Yoga Nidra has been found to reduce tension and anxiety.
The autonomic symptoms of high anxiety such as headache, giddiness, chest pain, palpitations, sweating and abdominal pain respond well. It has been used to help soldiers from war cope with post traumatic stress disorder. It has been used to help with insomnia, working with addictions, and following a set intention. It also is just a nice way to end your day and let go of stress and worries.
The practice is done usually lying down, but if falling asleep is something the practitioner struggles with sitting in a chair can work as well. The guided instruction given will differ depending on what the focus is for that session. The length of the session also depends on the focus and can range anywhere from 10 minutes. to over an hour, typically a class will be about an hour.
Here at Envision Personalized Health we our offering both private and semi-private Restorative Yoga sessions we are more than happy to do Yoga Nidra at the end of your practice as part of your shavasana- your ending posture. We will be offering a workshop to introduce Yoga Nidra and let one have an experience in a shorter time frame before going into a full session. Often it takes the practitioner a few times to adjust and allow their body to be at rest for a length of time. For more information on the workshop click here :
